In Cringe Video, OpenAI CTO Says She Doesn’t Know Where Sora’s Training Data Came From

Wondering what data OpenAI used to train its buzzy new text-to-video AI? The company’s CTO is similarly unsure. Mira Murati, OpenAI’s longtime chief technology officer, sat down with The Wall Street Journal’s Joanna Stern this week to discuss Sora, the company’s forthcoming video-generating AI. About halfway through the 10-minute-long interview, Stern straightforwardly asked Murati where the new model’s training data was gleaned from. But Murati, in the most cringe-inducing way possible, couldn’t find an answer beyond vague corporate language. “We used publicly available data and licensed data,” Murati responded to the resoundingly simple question. Stern pushed back with more specific source examples: “So, videos on YouTube?” “I’m actually not sure about that,” said Murati, before rebuffing further queries about whether videos shared to Instagram or Facebook were fed into model. “You know, if they were publicly available — publicly available to use,” the CTO answered, “but I’m n

Space loves AI, AI doesn’t love Space

Space-related applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning are often confined to the ground because moving AI onboard satellites, while promising, is significantly more difficult. “Running AI in space is like running a marathon on the moon — impressive if achieved, but limited by the environment,” said Sylvester Kaczmarek, chief technology officer at OrbiSky Systems, a London startup focused on AI edge operations. Advanced processors are power hungry, meaning satellites with onboard AI require large solar panels and extra batteries. Plus, “radiation in space can fry electronics,” Kaczmarek said. Power management is another problem. Many AI devices require very high currents at low voltages. “The demands that AI devices place on power management are new to the space industry,” said Bert Vermeire, Voyager Space chief technology officer. “There are no good solutions with space heritage and it is difficult to identify efficient and small form factor power and manageme

El Salvador’s Bitcoin HODL Strategy Pays Off as Nation Sees 55% Profit

El Salvador, the pioneering country that approved Bitcoin as legal tender, has consistently adhered to its HODL strategy, even amidst the market crash from two years ago and the massive rise toward new ATH this week. The country initiated its Bitcoin purchases in September 2021, when Bitcoin was valued at $51,769. El Salvador Boasts Huge Bitcoin Profit President Nayib Bukele’s Bitcoin strategy was questioned after its value dropped from $69,000 in November 2021 to $16,000 a year later. However, the investment returned to profitability when Bitcoin surpassed the average purchase price of $42,600 in February. According to its Bitcoin tracker, El Salvador has 2,864 BTC, whose current value is $188 million, acquired across 12 transactions at an average price of $42,630 each. Based on today’s market, Bitcoin has seen a 176% increase over the past year, pushing El Salvador’s unrealized gains to $66 million. The country now stands at a 54% profit from its original investment. While the

X Tests New, Additional Display of Pinned Posts In-Feed

I’m not sure that this will make a big difference, and I would love to see the stats on how many X (formerly Twitter) users are actually using the “For You” feed, as opposed to the “Following” option. But X is currently working on a new display which would ensure that your followers are shown your pinned posts in the app, via a new, dedicated breakout display in-stream. As you can see in this example , shared by X engineer Enrique Barragan , the new display would show your pinned posts to your followers via a side-scrolling update feed, which would be inserted into the “For You” listing. It’s not clear if the same unit would be displayed in the “Following” feed also, but the idea is that if you’re highlighting your best posts by pinning them, ensuring that your audience sees them should help to increase overall engagement. Though I’m not sure that it’ll actually work that way in practice. The concept was actually suggested by X owner Elon Musk last month, who proclaimed that:

Will $2.4B Bitcoin Options Expiry Drive Markets Lower?

Bitcoin is already in retreat following its all-time high of $73,580 this week, but will today’s big expiry event send prices tumbling lower? Around 30,600 Bitcoin options contracts will expire on March 15 with a notional value of around $2.45 billion. This week’s expiry event is slightly larger than last week’s, but a huge one worth almost $10 billion will occur at the end of March. Bitcoin Options Expiry The put/call ratio for today’s batch of Bitcoin options is 0.78 which means there are slightly more calls (long contracts) being sold than puts (shorts). There is a lot of open interest (OI) at the $65,000 strike price, according to Deribit, with $1.1 billion in total notional value there. Furthermore, there is almost $1 billion in OI at both $60,000 and $70,000 strike prices. Bitcoin options OI by expiry. EU approves controversial AI Act to mixed reactions

The European Parliament today approved the AI Act, the first ever regulatory framework governing the use of AI systems. The legislation passed with an overwhelming majority of 523 votes in favour, 46 against and 49 abstentions. “This is a historic day,” said Italian lawmaker Brando Benifei, co-lead on the AI Act. “We have the first regulation in the world which puts a clear path for safe and human-centric development of AI.” The AI Act will categorise AI systems into four tiers based on their potential risk to society. High-risk applications like self-driving cars will face strict requirements before being allowed on the EU market. Lower risk systems will have fewer obligations. “The main point now will be implementation and compliance by businesses and institutions,” Benifei stated. “We are also working on further AI legislation for workplace conditions.” His counterpart, Dragoş Tudorache of Romania, said the EU aims to promote these pioneering rules globally. “We have to be open

Instagram Is Experimenting With an Option To Add Files to DMs

What if you could send files in your IG DMs? That may soon be an option, with app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi uncovering this process in the back-end data of the app. As you can see in this example, Instagram’s experimenting with a new option that would let you add files to your messages as attachments. Which is not overly surprising. You can already send documents within WhatsApp , and on Messenger (in limited capacity), and with Meta still working to integrate all of its messaging platforms into a single system , it makes sense that it would also need to replicate the functionality of each, to ensure full parity. So, basically, every function within Messenger, IG Direct and/or WhatsApp will eventually be available in each other app, as that will then enable Meta to link them all together into a singular messaging system. As such, I do think this is coming, and is more than just an experiment, which will provide expanded functionality within your IG DMs, and could be handy

Meta Considers New Elements for Its Verified Subscription Package

If you’re not paying for verification on Facebook or Instagram, would you ever consider it? What about if Meta added in some new features for paying users, like, say, the capacity to add links in Reels? That’s one of several options seemingly on the table, as Meta looks for ways to drive more take-up of its Meta Verified program. As you can see in this example, posted by @cmcalgary (and shared by Lia Haberman ), Meta’s sending out a questionnaire to selected users to inquire about the features that they might consider paying for in its apps. The options Meta has listed as potential additions to entice sign-ups are: Original content protection (via human review) Faster ad reviews Better access to customer support Links in Reels (8 per month) Customer support case monitoring An alternative display for brand messages Alternative brand verification badge (like X’s gold tick?) There are some interesting considerations here, though I’m not sure that any of them are significa

Google Adds Social Media Posts to Business Listings

After expanding access to its option to add social media profiles to your Google Business listing back in October, Google has now added a new section within its business listings in Search , which displays recent social media posts from your connected profiles. As you can see in this example, shared by Search Engine Journal , Google Business profiles now have a new sub-section titled “Social Media Updates”, which displays the latest posts from your linked social apps. Businesses owners can connect their Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest, TikTok and X accounts via their Google Business dashboard. Google says that the social post previews are populated automatically based on the social profiles linked to the business. And while you can (and should) manually link your social media accounts, Google also notes that it may add social media links to eligible Business Profiles automatically in some cases.   As noted, last year, Google enabled more businesses to add so

Bitcoin’s New ‘Millionaire’ Wallets Lag Despite BTC’s All-Time High: Research

The number of new “millionaire” wallets for Bitcoin (BTC) has risen to about 1,500 daily after the cryptocurrency’s price surged to $72,000 recently. However, this increase is modest compared to the daily creation of new millionaires during the previous bull market. The leading cryptocurrency by market capitalization has experienced a 70% price surge since the beginning of the year. The total market cap currently stands at $1.4 trillion, reflecting a 4.5% increase in the last 24 hours, as reported by CoinGecko data. New Bitcoin Millionaire Wallet Creation Slows Down According to data from Kaiko, a Paris-based analytics firm, fewer than 2,000 new Bitcoin millionaire wallets are being created daily. The amount is a major decrease from the peak period of the last bull run in November 2021, when Bitcoin reached its then-all-time high of $69,000. During the bull run, over 4,000 new millionaire wallets and more than 2,000 addresses holding at least $10 million in Bitcoin were establish

Grayscale Sees Huge Bitcoin ETF Outflow, But Record Inflow for VanEck

Funds have been flowing out of the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) for more than two months. Moreover, March 11 was the largest outflow for the month. A whopping $494 million worth of BTC exited the fund yesterday. This works out at 6,850 BTC, according to BitMEX Research, which labeled it a record outflow. The BitMEX declaration is misleading, however, as GBTC outflows exceeded $500 million for five days in January and again on Feb. 29. SIX THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED AND FIFTY ALL TIME RECORD HIGH BITCOIN WITHDRAWN FROM GBTC TODAY — BitMEX Research (@BitMEXResearch) March 11, 2024 BitMEX clarified stating that it meant a record-high in terms of Bitcoin price, before adding it was the sixth-largest outflow in US dollar terms for GBTC. Why Is BTC Leaving Grayscale? Grayscale’s Bitcoin holdings have declined by 36% since GBTC was converted into a spot ETF in January. Before the conversion, it held around 620,000 BTC, but that figure has now fallen to 395,744, according to its websi
